Oxygen Use Guide
CUSTOMER GUIDE TO OXYGEN USE BY CONCENTRATOR
Your doctor has ordered oxygen for you to use while at home. The prescription states that you should use your oxygen at _______ . Use oxygen only at the prescribed liter flow. Treat oxygen as you would other medications. Remember, "More is not necessarily better."
OXYGEN USE
EQUIPMENT PREPARATION
- Be sure that unit is secure, away from head, direct sunlight, open flames, smoking or combustible materials. The unit should be at least 6 inches from the wall.
- Plug in power cord to properly grounded 115 volt household outlet.
- Screw on humidifier attachment (water bottle), if one is used, tightly to the concentrator oxygen outlet.
- Connect oxygen tubing securely to the concentrator outlet.
- Turn the power switch on.
- Set flow meter to prescribed liter flow.
- Adjust the oxygen delivery device to your nose. (nasal cannula, mask, ect.)
WHEN OXYGEN IS NOT IN USE
- Turn power switch off.
- Clean or replace humidifier (if used) when water is below minimum lever, or ever week which ever comes first.
- Replace (i.e. nasal cannula, mask, etc) at least every 2 weeks, or sooner if dirty or contaminated with secretions.
- Check unit filter for cleaning {once per week). Remove filter, clean in warm soapy water, rinse, shake dry and replace.
TROUBLESHOOTING· OXYGEN DEUVERY PROBLEMS
- Check that power cord is plugged into properly grounded 115 volt household outlet.
- Check that the unit power switch is on.
- Check unit circuit breaker. Reset button if it has popped out. (Devilbiss Coocentrator only.
- Check that flow control is on and adjusted to proper flow setting.
- Check that humidifier (if used) is tightly screwed into outlet.
- Check that bubbles are observed in humidifier bottle.
- Check that oxygen tubing is free of water, which may be blocking oxygen flow.
- Check that oxygen tubing is securely attached to an outlet.
- Check that oxygen tubing is not crimped or pinched off by heavy objects.
- Check household circuit breaker or fuse to see if blown. Reset or replace if necessary or use another object.
- Check that the wall switch for power is in the on position.
Steps (1) through (9) do not correct the problem, call Medical Technology.
PRECAUTIONS
- Be sure that concentrator is kept secure in a ventilated area at least 5 feet away from heat; direct sunlight, open flames, smoking or combustible materials or electrical sparks.
- Use care if concentrator is moved. Avoid dropping.
- Never permit grease, oil, or other combustible materials to come into contact with oxygen delivery equipment.
DEFINITIONS
- Regulator Contents Gauge -It displays on a dial the amount of oxygen inside the cylinder.
- Flow meter -It controls the rate that the oxygen flows to you.
EQUIPMENT PREPARATION
- Be sure that oxygen cylinder is secure on a cart or stand away from heat, direct sunlight, open flames, smoking or combusting materials.
- Turn cylinder wrench key counterclockwise {left) to open cy1inder valve.
- Observe pressure on regular dial. Check liter flow chart to determine amount of usage available.
- Screw on ripple adaptor or humidifier attachment (water bottle) if one is used, tightly to the tank outlet.
- Connect oxygen tubing securely to the humidifier outlet / nipple adaptor.
- Set flow on the flow dial or flow tube to prescribed liter flow.
- Adjust the oxygen delivery device to your nose (nasal cannula, mask, etc.)
WHEN OXYGEN IS NOT IN USE
- Turn cylinder wrench key clockwise, (right) until flow meter and pressure dial drop to zero and cylinder valve is off. Then return flow control to off position.
- Check that cylinder is secure on cart, away from heat, open flames, smoking or combustible materials.
- Clean or replace humidifier (if used) when water is below minimum level, or ever week whichever comes first.
- Clean or replace oxygen delivery equipment (i.e. nasal cannula, mask, ect.) at least at the end of each week, or sooner if dirty or contaminated with secretions.
TROUBLESHOOTING OXYGEN DELIVERY PROBLEMS FLOW OF OXYGEN
- Check that cylinder key is in open position.
- Check that pressure is observed on regular dial.
- Check that flow dial is on and adjusted to proper flow setting.
- Check that humidifier nipple adapter is tightly screwed to regulator.
- Check that oxygen tubing is securely attached to outlet.
- Check that oxygen tubing is not crimped or pinched off by heavy objects.
- Check that oxygen tubing is free of water which may be blocking oxygen flow.
Steps (1) through (7) do not correct the problem, call Medical Technology.
PRECAUTIONS
Use cart if oxygen cylinder is moved. Avoid dropping. Avoid bumping the regulator.
